Hyperdub’s Jessy Lanza announces her own mix for DJ-Kicks, arriving November 19th. To “kick” things off, she shares a new single and video, “Seven 55” with labelmate Loraine James, directed by her longtime collaborator Winston H Case. This fall, she embarks on tour for a string of headlining shows as well as a supporting slot with Caribou.
Ridiculously exhilarating, like getting splashed in the face with a Supersoaker, Jessy’s DJ-Kicks compilation fuses her collaborators, contemporaries, and friends together into a rubbery, synthy dance party. Lead single “Seven 55” combines her understated, cutesy delivery with Loraine James’ own understated take on drill.
Describing the song and video, Jessy says: “I wrote ‘Seven 55’ about a close friend and his inability to commit. I fantasized about the women caught in his web and wrote ‘Seven 55’ from their point of view. I think it’s important to face a nightmare head on so what better place than Las Vegas to shoot the video for a song about longing and denial. In the video, Winston captures people in liminal spaces in limbo between destinations during their weekend in Vegas.”
